According to records, Castiglione was especially fond of painting portraits. The Ch'ien-lung emperor (r. 1736-1795) praised him as being unequalled in his specialty. This depiction of Ayusi on horseback attacking an enemy exudes a spirit of martial courage. Both the spirit of the man and the strength of the horse seem to leap from the surface of the painting.
